Those Old VHS Tapes Could Be Worth Gold

Nostalgia can always lead to enthusiasts willing to pay big money to collect things like old vinyl records.

And now there is a growing market for Disney VHS tapes.

If you browse on eBay for something like “The Lion King,” or “The Little Mermaid,” VHS copies are going for upwards of $25,000!

But, before you run off and collect all of your old tapes, this appears to be just a frenzy.

Gabriel Prado owns Auction Nation in Phoenix. He says, in reality, you’re only going to get around $5 to $10 for your tape.

“If everybody and their brother has something, I mean, you might get a buzz effect but you aren’t going to get a true value effect for it,” Prado said.

So before you feel like you have to jump on the bandwagon and pay some big money to collect the old Disney movies on VHS, you should be wary that the price bubble could burst.

For those of us who remember the 1990s, it happened with those popular Beanie Babies. Some of the bears were blowing up in value, some into the hundreds of dollars but in the end, they were worth nothing.

However, it’s not all bad news.

If you are willing to hold onto that big box of old Disney VHS tapes, they could one day be worth something more.

“Until VHS gets to the age where most of them were thrown out and back to eight-track tapes and vinyl records are really hot right now. Most got disposed of when they became obsolete so what’s left on the market is actually what’s hot,” Prado said.
