As 2014 draws to a close, I think we should take a few minutes and reflect on all the great music we got to hear this year. Okay, so maybe not all of it is great, but whether or not some of the songs we heard on the radio this year are worthy of winning a Grammy, we can at least totally agree that they were damn catchy. Even so, it’s still embarrassing to have on your iPod.
Lyrically, they weren’t exceedingly complex. There wasn’t an awful to of symbolism to wade through, either. (Anaconda, anyone? Gee, I wonder what she was singing about.) But it’s okay, guys, this is a safe place where we can all admit what we never wanted to admit — that we adored these pop hits of 2014.
1. “Shake it Off” by Taylor Swift.
The queen of catchy music and endearing silliness, Taylor’s “screw the haters” anthem snuck its way into everybody’s ears and refused to leave. I bet you still find yourself singing it to yourself.
2. “All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor.
If cotton candy had a look and a sound, this is exactly what it would look and sound like. Welcome to the pop music scene, Meghan. Your music is fun as hell, and we loved it this year.
