2015 Agar Art Contest: Creating Masterpieces From Bacteria

Agar Art Contest is a yearly competition sponsored by American Society for Microbiology. For this interesting contest, microbiologists were asked to channel their inner Van Goghs and Picassos and “paint” yeast conlonies and strand of bacteria on Agar, a gelatinous substance used in making biological cultures.

There were 85 entries all in all and in this post, we are going to show you 30 of the best creations. Be amazed by the talent of these artistic microbiologists as they re-create Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” and a map of New York City using only colorful microbes in petri dishes. Enjoy!
