Decorating Mistakes You’re Probably Making Right Now

If home decor is not your thing, don’t worry one little bit.  We’ve got you covered.  It’s hard to know what looks good or doesn’t and what’s in or out right now in terms of home decor.  So, we’ve rounded up 15 decorating mistakes you’re probably making right now and how to fix them to make your home look even better!

1. Putting down a toilet rug

These are not cute.  They draw attention to your toilet (ew) and we don’t love ’em.  Instead of a rug that circles the toilet, trying putting down a mat or rug for your feet that doesn’t touch the toilet?  It’s a win-win.

2. Tons of photo frames

So, we know you love having pictures of your favorite people all over the place, but seriously, this looks like such a mess.  You can’t even appreciate what’s in the pictures.  Create a gallery wall instead–you’ll be glad you did.

3. Having a boring entry way

Yawn.  If this is what your house looks like, nobody’s gonna care.  Why not create a pretty and stunning statement piece right here to show off just how great your house is, from the very first step.

4. Having lots of messy exposed cords

This looks terrible.  How about hiding all the mess in an organized box with space and labels so you know what’s what.

5. Tacky themed rooms

Don’t do this, it’s so 1995.  If you’re wanting something whimsical and fun, try simple statement pieces instead.  A tropical pillow, a brightly colored lamp shade.  You get the idea.

6. Outdated accessories

First of all, if you move into a house with cabinets that look like these, PAINT THEM.  Then add some new hardware to give them a sophisticated look.

7. Furniture that doesn’t flow well

Getting pieces that match and bring some feng shui to your space can be a really good thing.  This set up just feels really all over the place.

8. Keeping stuff you hate

If there is something in your house that you really can’t stand and grump about every time you see it, then change it!  Get rid of that awful carpet or ugly paint.  It might cost some money, but you’ll feel so much better about it in the long run.

9. Furniture that hurts to sit on

There’s nothing wrong with adding some comfy pads to your wooden chairs.  Or, consider having some upholstery done. It’ll be softer all over.

10. Clutter peeking out everywhere

Why not try covering up the clutter in some decorative storage spaces, like underneath the stairs or in nooks in a coat room.

11. Everything matching

This was also cool in like, the 90’s.  Not so cool now.  Get ride of your all-matching decor and add some pieces with color and texture.  Don’t be afraid to mix it up.

12. Crowded furniture

Get furniture that fits your space.  If it’s too big, don’t keep it.  It makes everything else look and feel smaller.

13. Too many patterns

All the colors and textures colliding makes us a little dizzy.  Get one great pattern and stick with it.

14. Ignoring the windows

Windows are pretty– they’re the best way to bring natural light and color from the outside world.  Don’t ignore them!  Add some nice blinds or hang drapes.  Don’t leave them there all bland.

15. Too many decorative pillows

Yes, there can definitely be too much of a good thing.  Pillows are great for adding color and texture but too many makes the space look uninviting.
