Hey, we’ve all been there, you hear some bad fashion advice and yet, you still follow it out of fear that someone will call you out! Well, we’re here to tell you that the rules have changed the old ones don’t apply anymore! It’s a wonderful thing. Here are 15 fashion mistakes you had no idea you were making.
1. Not mixing prints
It used to be a fashion don’t to be mix stripes and florals or polka dots and prints…well, not anymore. Today, the more bold and eclectic the look, the better. Don’t go crazy– if you’re nervous, try a classic striped top and floral skirt. You can’t miss with that.
2. Buying cheap jeans
I know, I know, clothes are so pricey these days and those cheap Forever 21 jeans are calling your name. Ok. But, you’ll be wearing these jeans almost every single day and you need them to hold up, so take your time and spend a little more– they’ll last longer and look better.
3. Not accessorizing
Loading down an outfit with accessories isn’t for everyone, but at least try to spice things up with a nice watch, a chain necklace or some pretty rings. It can add a lot to a simple outfit.
4. Not mixing casual and business attire
These days, it’s all about knowing how to mix work with pleasure. Wear a short dress with a blazer and heels, or a polished skirt with a t-shirt and flats. Mix it up– it’s more fun that way!
5. Wearing pieces that just don’t fit right
We know you have something in your closet that you love dearly but it’s just too short and wide or too bunchy or too tight. You keep it because you love it, even though it doesn’t wear right. Well, it’s time to move on. Clothes like that are just weighing you down and making you feel self-conscious. Get things that fit right and move on.
6. Break some rules
You CAN wear denim with denim. You can also wear white after labor day (who even came up with that?) Just do what feels right.
7. Work your layers
Layering is one of the amazing ways to look fashionable. It’s all about how you can mix and match and pair cute things with your outfit. Learn how to layer– it will save your (fashion) life.
8. Add some color
We know you like to stick to basics– black, white, beige, tan…blah blah blah. But add a pop of color in there every once in a while! The color will make your outfit pop and bring more attention to you. You won’t regret it!
9. Don’t be afraid to go low
Low as in heels that is. You don’t have to wear heels every day to look good. And you know as well as I do that heels are NOT comfortable. So wear some cute flats– you’ll be glad you did.
10. Wearing something tight and short in the same outfit
So, you can go one of two ways– either wear something tight OR something short. Not both. You want to have an air of class and elegance about you. Just trust me on this one.
11. Midi skirts are in
Forget about mini skirts– try a midi– a full-bodied, calf-skimming skirt that will make your waist look tiny and your legs perfect.
12. Get your active wear on
Workout gear is now cool to wear at more than just the gym. Stroll around town in leggings, wear your favorite yoga hoodie to the mall. You’ll look sporty, chic and very comfortable.
13. Scarves, belts, and hats
These three key items have the power to take your outfit from “yeah, ok,” to “awesomely adorable!” Collect as many cheap versions of these things as possible because you’ll always need them.
14. Stop wearing jeans, t-shirt and athletic shoes
There are so many ways to jazz up a simple outfit. You need to work a little bit harder. You can do better than this.
15. One pieces are in
Throw out those skimpy bikinis because they are officially out of style and try on a cute one-piece swimsuit. You’ll feel better about yourself, won’t have to worry about your top coming off in the water, and your confidence will shine through.
