It’s a well known fact that most celebs in Hollywood worry about their weight changes frequently. What happens their weight changes dramatically? Whether it was for personal reasons or for a role, it doesn’t make it any less outrageous!
1. Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Hudson’s 2010 weight loss makeover was the talk of Hollywood for months. In 2009, Hudson had to lose weight for her role in Winnie, a film where she played Nelson Mandela’s wife. To lose the weight, she worked out with Harley Pasternak, a popular trainer for the stars, and began using the Weight Watchers program. She became a spokesperson for Weight Watchers in April 2010.
2. Christian Bale
In order to play the role of a chronic insomniac in a film called The Machinist, Christian Bale had to lose a shocking 63 pounds. To make sure he still got the nutrients he needed, Bale took vitamin supplements, but he hardly ate and over exercised. By the end of his diet, his six foot figure weighed only 122 pounds. He also later slimmed down again to play a former professional boxer in the movie The Fighter.
3. Kelly Osbourne
After being on Dancing With The Stars, the daughter of the infamous rocker Ozzy Osbourne dropped 50 pounds. She attributes her weight loss to the dancing workouts, weight training, and the fact that she quit emotionally eating. To celebrate her new figure, Kelly bared it on the cover of Shape magazine for the December 2010 edition.
4. Jared Leto
Jared Leto gained 60 pounds for his role of John Lennon’s killer in the movie Chapter 27. In an interview, he reported that he force-fed himself to gain the weight. After the role, he said he won’t be gaining weight for a role again because it took over a year for him to feel normal again. He also developed severe foot pain as a result of the fast weight gain.
5. Charlize Theron
For her role as a prostitute and serial killer in the 2003 film Monster, Charlize Theron gained 30 pounds by eating donuts. Her body changed so dramatically from the weight gain that she was almost unrecognizable in the film. Before the film even premiered, Charlize was already back to her normal figure, which is around a size 8.
6. Seth Rogen
Seth Rogen’s weight has changed dramatically since the funny guy first hit Hollywood. Rogen lost around 30 pounds over the course of nine months by working out and training with well-known celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak, who also worked with Jennifer Hudson.
7. Renee Zellweger
For her classic role as Bridget Jones, Renee Zellweger gained 20 pounds, making her go from a size 4 to a size 14. After finishing the film, Zellweger immediately dropped the weight she had gained through various diets. Even more shocking than her speedy weight gains and losses was the fact that even after returning to her healthy size 4 figure, she continued dropping weight. Since then, Zellweger’s weight has fluctuated.
8. Valerie Bertinelli
After reaching a weight of 172 pounds in 2007, actress Valerie Bertinelli lost 50 pounds and became a spokeswoman for the diet company Jenny Craig. Valerie maintains her weight of approximately 128 pounds by staying active (she even ran in the 2010 Boston Marathon!), exercising, and watching her portion sizes.
After being diagnosed with high blood pressure and weighing in at over 260 pounds, body-loving and body-positive comedian and actress Mo’Nique decided to get healthy. She lost around 45 pounds by eating healthier in 2009. She dropped the weight by getting rid of junk food, fried foods, and red meat, simultaneously making her figure go from a size 20 to a size 14.
10. Al Roker
In 2002, The famous Today Show weather anchor, Al Roker, weighed over 340 pounds and wore suits that were size 60. Roker had tried losing weight numerous times throughout his life, but he always gained the weight back. After undergoing gastric bypass surgery, he dropped 140 pounds. He now watches his portion sizes and exercises often in order to maintain a weight of approximately 200 pounds.
11. 50 Cent
50 Cent didn’t lose a shocking amount of weight because of health concerns. In May 2010, the rapper posted concerning photos of himself after he went from 214 pounds to just 160 pounds in only nine weeks. The jaw dropping weight loss was part of his role as a cancer patient in the film Things Fall Apart. Luckily, 50 Cent was back to a healthy and normal weight by September 2010.
12. Kirstie Alley
Actress Kirstie Alley is one of the stars that are known to struggle with their weight. Alley lost 75 pounds with the help of Jenny Craig’s diet when she was the spokesperson for the well-known diet company. When her contract ended, she unfortunately gained a lot of that weight back. When her weight reached over 200, she starred in her own show about her weight struggles in the mid-200s. In 2008, she tried losing weight once again, and was successful.
13. Ricki Lake
Ricki Lake’s weight helped her hit stardom in the 1988 film Hairspray, where she starred as adorably chubby Tracy Turnblad. Since Hairspray, Ricki has struggled with her weight. In 1992, she lost an insane and unhealthy 100 pounds by starving herself. Today, luckily, she diets more responsibly and maintains a healthy size 6 after losing 140 pounds and joining a fresh-food delivery service.
14. Randy Jackson
American Idol judge Randy Jackson weighed over 300 pounds and was struggling to keep his diabetes under control in 2002. In 2003, the music legend underwent gastric bypass surgery. As a result, he lost 100 pounds. He kept the weight off by eating healthier and spending more time exercising.
15. Sara Rue
Actress Sara Rue lost 50 pounds after she joined Jenny Craig and began regularly running. Rue went on to become a Jenny Craig spokesperson, but says that she’s done losing weight. As a result, she carefully watches her weight in order to maintain her size 6 figure.
