Truffles are extremely rare and are as expensive as some illegal drugs, so what is like dealing in something that’s legal but is also highly valued in the food world?

Truffles are also a big black market ticket item, and are often smuggled in and out of the country to be sold illegally. Prices range from $1,000-$2,500 per pound depending on the type of truffle. Tuber magnatum truffles sold for $1000–$2200 per pound until December 2009, as of that time they were being sold at $14,203.50 per kilogram, or just over $6400 per pound.

The record purchase for a single white truffle was set in 2007 when Macau casino owner Stanley Ho paid $330,000 for a specimen weighing 1.5 kilograms.
